I've seen "The Arab Legion" by Peter Young which shows a 1944 photo of soldiers in battledress but Officers in open tunic. Does anyone know if Officers wore the battledress in the field or the earlier tunic? Also was the cloth headdress or helmet usually worn on active service/field? Pat.

Like the British battledress was worn by all ranks in the field. However, service dress was the usual style for general duties. I doubt if the helmet was worn for anything but policing and parade duties, with a head cloth taking its place in the field. Good question though.

This bloke wears an economy battledress with Jordan helmet.
Numbers on the collar identify a policeman.

Sean i was actually refereing to the British tin helmet , but now i've had another look at "The Arab Legion"-Peter Young it looks that the headcloth was worn. Spiked helmet worn by police(dark blue uniform/helmet for civilian police duty) and bandsmen.Pat.

I've seen a few photos (late1930s/earlyWW2), with the Legionaries wearing the tunic with stand collar, breeches ,puttees and the spiked helmet and neck flap. Would they have continued to wear this helmet as field wear early WW2, before they recieved the battle dress uniform (late 1940-early 41?) or would the headcloth be worn , as worn later on? Ranjit.

If the helmet had been worn in the field, the spike no doubt would've been removed, as it had been on the German pickelhaube in 1915.

Note the KD uniform and the coloured side cap worn by the officer at the back of the photo.

The officer in the dark uniform is Yugoslavian, escorting the exiled King of Yugoslavia at the inspection.

From auction site. A couple of British (or maybe one British and one Jordanian MP) soldiers appear to have trouble taking the local constabulary seriously.
