Rules of the Volunteer Force in Ceylon 1891
29: Uniform: The uniform of the Corps shall be as follows:-
ARTILLERY
Gunners & NCOs
Helmet – White, with silver ball and chain and puggaree.
Jacket – White drill, buttoned in front by five ball buttons.
Trousers – Blue cloth with broad red stripes.
Forage Cap – Round, blue cloth with red band and strap, or new regulation fatigue cap.
Boots – Ammunition.
Officers
Helmet – The same as for Gunners.
Jacket – As for Gunners, with blue silk shoulder straps bound with red, and badges of rank in metal on them.
Trousers – Same as for Gunners.
Forage Cap – Round, blue cloth, with silver band and leather strap, or the new regulation fatigue cap.
Mess Jacket – White drill, with shoulder straps as on Jacket.
Waistcoat – White waistcoat or red kamarband.
Mess Trousers – White drill.
Cloth Tunic and European Mess Kit – Optional, as for Volunteer Artillery in England.
Sword and Sword Belt – As for Volunteer Artillery in England.
Cross Belt – White patent leather, with black pouch with silver gun on it.
INFANTRY
Privates
Helmet – White, with silver spike, chain and badge.
Forage Cap – Blue Glengarry, with red tuft and silver badge on the left side, 1 ¾ in from the front.
Tunic – Scarlet serge, with blue cloth collar and cuffs. Austrian knot of white braid on sleeves, and silver badge on collar.
Trousers – White drill.
Boots – Ammunition.
Gaiters – White canvas.
Sergeants
As detailed for Privates, with badges of rank on right arm above the elbow; points of chevrons downwards.
Lance-Sergeants, Corporals, and Lance-Corporals
The badges of rank will be of worsted instead of silver.
Officers
Helmet – Same as for Privates, with special badge and foot for spike.
Tunic (Optional) – Scarlet cloth, same as Infantry Officers of Regular Army, but silver lace instead of gold.
Mess Jacket and Waistcoat – (Optional) Scarlet cloth jacket and blue cloth waistcoat, trimmed as Infantry Officers of Regular Army, but silver lace instead of gold.
Cloth Trousers – (Optional) Blue cloth with red stripes, same as Infantry Officers of Regular Army.
Jacket – White drill, same pattern as a patrol jacket, buttoned by five large silver regimental buttons, with two breast pockets outside with 1 1/2in flap thereto; blue silk shoulder straps, with badges of rank in metal on them, fastened with a small silver regimental badge.
Trousers – White drill.
Mess Jacket and Waistcoat – White drill with blue silk shoulder straps and badges of rank in metal on them; four small silver regimental buttons on waistcoat.
Serge Tunic – Same material as for privates, with blue silk shoulder straps and badges of rank.
Forage Cap – As for Officers in Regular Army, but silver lace in place of gold; also Glengarry Cap of the same pattern as Volunteers.
Cross Belts – White patent leather and black patent leather pouch with silver badge.
Sword Belt – Same as Officers in Regular Army, but silver studs with silver buckle of regimental pattern.
Sword - Same as Officers in Regular Army.
Gaiters – Same as for Privates.
Boots – When gaiters are worn, thick lace shooting boots; without gaiters, plain-fronted parade boots, with straps to the trousers.
Mounted Officers
White breeches and jack boots.
Horse Furniture
Same as for Mounted Officers in Regular Army.
BEARER COMPANY
Privates
Helmet – Same as for Infantry.
Jacket – White drill with Geneva cross on right arm.
Trousers – White drill.
Officers
Same as for Infantry, but with special cross belt as for Army Medical Staff, substituting silver for gold.
CADET CORPS
The uniform for Cadets will be jacket and trousers of white drill, the former with standing collar and regimental buttons; hat, white straw of uniform shape, with school ribbon; boots or shoes of black leather.
