UN Security Guards 2006/07
A few pictures lifted from the UN picture galleries, showing the Security Guards in their 06/07 uniforms.

Interesting, it seems that they are no longer armed.
Every UN Security Police officer used to be armed and had NYC Special Patrolman status while on duty - thus giving them the same status and authority as the NYC Police Dept. and the 30 odd other NYC law enforcement agencies.
I wonder if their officers are all American or if they are recruited internationally? I know their rank structure and rank insignia is the usual American style.

I thought they were recruited from around the world, hence no bias from one country.
COuld be wrong, but it sounds like a good plan.

UN Guards worldwide recruitment
Hi guys,
Have to agree with Sean on this one, I talked with a few of these guys in Vienna at a security conference and within the group they had security guards from Israel, Germany, France, Sweden ?, Canada and one guy from Africa, I think from Kenya but not certain.
The common link between them all was they all spoke excellent English, the international diplomatic language.
They can be posted anywhere in the world or request a posting to a specific country if one opens up.
Although they are shown unarmed in the photos that were posted, I understand that they have some units that can carry firearms as part of a Diplomatic Security Detail. I do not know much about when they are used but they are NOT uniformed to blend into the back ground, I'm assuming like US Secret Service do.
Best Regards,
Les

Re: UN Security Guards 2006/07
Just found this photo and since it is very clear in showing the insignias I thought it was worth posting.

The breast badge is based on the design of the New York City Police Captains rank, with the U.N. Seal in the centre.
This may be the current uniform for 2009, but note sure.
Regards,
Les
