Uniform Worn in Nyasaland & Northern Rhodesia
1. Barrack Duties
K.D. Bush shirt
K.D. shorts
Hosetops
Short puttees
Garter flashes
Boots
Bush hat
One suit of battle dress would be useful
2. Ceremonial
When on parade with troops
As for Barrack duties.
Sam Browne belt & sword
When not on parade with troops
No.1 Dress (or No.3 Dress if already in possession) or Blue Patrols.
Note – KD/SD Jackets should also be brought
3. Training
Beret of jungle hat
Angola shirt with pockets & epaulettes
K.D. trousers
Web anklets or short puttees
Boots
All the above can be procured locally & are worn with regimental trimmings for KAR (Nyasaland) or NRR pattern.
4. Mess Wear
Mess Kit, Blue Patrols or No.1 Dress of own regiment;
or
White monkey jacket of own regimental pattern with cummerbund, No.1 Dress trousers and own regimental headdress.
Uniform worn in Southern Rhodesia
5. As above, except that battledress and own regimental pattern service dress (if in possession) should be brought.
6. Greatcoats are not normally worn, but mackintoshes are useful.
Civilian Clothes
7. The full range of civilian clothes as worn in the United Kingdom are worn throughout the Federation.
8. As the greater part of the year is warm, plenty of summer clothes should be brought (i.e. shorts & shirts for men & cotton dresses for women). A tropical weight suit is useful.
9. Dinner jackets should be brought. A white dinner jacket is useful in the hot weather but not essential. Tail coats are not necessary.
10. Sports clothes for the sport in which one is interested should be brought (e.g. riding breeches, tennis kit, swimming trunks, squash racquet & golf clubs).
11. The winter months can be cold (especially in Southern Rhodesia) & warm underclothes & tweed jackets are advised, although an overcoat is not essential.
12. For the rainy season mackintoshes are most necessary, & umbrellas are useful.
