A military academy in 1912 - for the deaf!
While looking for something totally unrelated, I found this in The Volta Review Vol. 13, 1912, the journal of the Volta Speech Association for the Deaf. It's one of several photos of the recently formed New York Military Institute, a military school for the deaf. Drill commands were given by hand signals, and the boys fielded a band. Of course, none of the students could look forward to a military career, but the military school was intended to inculcate discipline and virtues useful in any field. (Courtesy of Google Books.)
