Portugal, a nation that doesn’t get the publicity it rightly deserves, always in the shadow of Britain and France in my opinion anyway!

Very good Bill. I have always admired the courage of the Portuguese Army in the Napoleonic Wars, they never gave up even as the French occupied entire swaths of their country.

I must agree with you Chris, the Portuguese army puts me in mind of the Belgium army during WWI, maybe not the best comparison though.

Here's my attempt at a Spanish Fusilier from the Extremadura Infantry Regiment c1808.
Taken from Osprey's MAA332 which gives the following details.
1805 white uniform, crimson collar, cuffs,  cuff flaps, lapels, piping, with brass Buttons and black gaiters, The bicorm had a red plum.

One thing that puzzles me about the white uniforms favoured by the line infantry of 18th century armies (notably French, Austrian, Neapolitan and Spanish) is how they kept them clean! Especially in the Spanish service where they only received a new coat every six or seven years (by contrast the British redcoat got a new one once a year). Washing in water would shrink garments and discolour the lapel and cuff facings - the vegetable based dyes of the period were not fast. Pipeclay rubbed over soiled patches might give a superficial impression of cleanliness but one gets the impression that mostly they just didn't bother.

Could be the cost of dyeing uniforms was far greater than bleaching them, many armies depended on the 'camp follower' to perform such tasts as cleaning uniforms to earn their keep.
I believe the British army issued a new coat every Dec 25th, any worn out before then came out of the sodiers wages.
Necessaries that every soldier had to have was;
a painted canvas bag
four white shirts
six false collars
a leather cap
two pairs of shoes
one pair of white socks
one pair of worsted stockings
three pairs of socks
pair of black cloth gaiters
pair of shoe buckles
pair of knee buckles
stock buckle
along wiht various brushes, combs, leather stock, and shaving gear with a total weight of around thirty eight pounds.
Most of which had to be paid for if lost.
