Imperial Iranian Gendarmerie questions
I am trying to make a rank insignia chart for the Imperial Iranian Gendarmerie and on the following website ( http://www.shahyad.net/iiarmy/Gendarmerie/Gendarmerie.html ) it states that:
But:
1) Was the Gendarmerie commanded by a full General?
2) Did they have warrant officers?
3) What was the branch of service color for the gendarmerie?
I can assume it was the same as seen here: http://www.uniforminsignia.org/?option=com_insigniasearch&Itemid=53&result=1332The gendarmerie used the same basic uniform as the army, had the same rank structure
But:
1) Was the Gendarmerie commanded by a full General?
2) Did they have warrant officers?
3) What was the branch of service color for the gendarmerie?

Iranian Gendarmerie
Hi Chris,
To answer one of your questions.
The Imperial Iranian Gendarmerie had a General in command according to the book 'Police of the World' by Roy Ingleton ,although the book was published in 1979 it is a little vague as to when this was.
Found this website about how the Gendarmerie was started
http://www.iranica.com/newsite/index.isc?Article=http://iranica.com/newsite/articles/ot_grp10/ot_swedofficers_20060601.html
Assisted by the Swedish Police. Quite interesting.
According to 'The World's Police' by James Cramer 1964. quote 'There is also a force of Gendarmerie in Iran, a semi-militaryforce, responsible ,it is thought for security duties inthe rural and border areas. It has recently been reorganised and had a mission from the U.S.A. attached to it for training purposes.' So he couldn't find out much about them then.
I have a two page uniform guide done by Guido Rosignoli from 1983 entitled 'Iranian Army Uniforms and badges of the 1970's' He states that 'the Flags, uniforms and badges dealt with in this article were used during the last period of the Shah's regime'. If you are not familiar with these illustrations I can scan them and get Sean to post them on the forum. Of note is the fact that the lower ranks stripes are all based on US Army ranks which fits in with what 'Cramer' says about the training by the USA Mission. Unit collar badges are shown but the Gendarmerie is not mentioned.
Any of this of help ?
Best Regards,
Les

IRAN Gendarmerie
Hi Chris,
Found some photos of Iranian Gendarmerie insignia on the internet , just need to resize them and tidy them up. Before I can post them here.
Here is the essential info for you.
Branch of Service insignia - crossed straight swords , silver/ chrome
Branch of Service colour - Royal Blue
All military ranks utilised from Sergeants up to General.
Their Cap badges are different from the military and the Police.
More info as and when I find it.
Best Regards,
Les

Imperial Iranian Gendarmerie questions
Hi Chris,
Managed to find the time to put together this inisgnia page to show you the Gendarmerie and Police badges used during the Shah era. Posted by Sean on my behalf.
Don't know if it helps with your project but it might be of interest for the future if you are doing any other research.
I also found a load of images of current insignias which I am going to put together as a few pages, however none has as yet been verified , so will probably start a New thread and get some opinions.
Bestr Regards,
Les
