The Nepalese redcoats shown were a unit whose title was usually translated as "Royal Foot Guards". They were still wearing that uniform in 2001 when two royal funerals were held in quick succession (the Nepalese Crown Prince had run amok killing the king and queen plus seven other members of the Royal Family). With the final abolition of the Monarchy in 2008 the Royal Foot Guards were presumably disbanded - or relegated to mundane duties in drab uniforms.

The uniform itself closely resembles that of the 1st Gurkha Rifles in the time of the Raj. Under the title of "1st Gurkha Light Infantry" they wore scarlet even though the other nine Gurkha regiments were in rifle green with only minor distinctions. Then in 1885 an interfering Viceroy pressed for green for all. The idea was unpopular in the 1st, who pointed out that recruits in Nepal usually asked to join the "Lal kurti pal tan" (red coat regiment) because it was different. By contrast the handful of rifle regiments in the British Army always found recruiting easy because their green uniforms were in sharp contrast to the scarlet of the mass of line infantry. At any rate in India standardization finally triumphed and the 1st Gurkhas became green clad rifles (though with red piping to commemorate their lost distinction).
