Hello,
Upon several information, I have produced the rank insignia of British army officers during 1922 to 1928. If there is any mistake, please correct me.

Hi Shams,
Very nice illustrations, you may want to alter the shape of the crown.

British Army Officers rank Empty Re: British Army Officers rank

Good job on this and the Indian Army VCO rank insignia charts!

The only error I cans see is that you appear to be using the St. Edwards crown style which has only been in use since Elizabeth II ascended to the throne in 1952. Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, and George VI all used the Tudor crown which is slightly different looking. I believe the pips may have been different as well but I am not 100% certain on that.

Any plans to do the NCOs and warrant officers?

Thanks Wfrad and ChrisF202. Despite the crown and pips error, I think no error is in the chart or image.
I have a plan to draw complete rank history of British army officers from 1830 to 1928. So far I have collected information. But I want to know about the collar and cuff design of General officers (Gen, Lt Gen, Maj Gen, Brig Gen) and Colonel on the staff of 1874 which was described in the Dress regulations 1874. Can you help me about these information?
After doing this, I may give attention on the rank history of NCO and WO of British army.

Shams

British Army Officers rank Empty Facings

Post  wfrad Tue 17 Jul 2012, 8:50 am

Hi Shams.
I believe that from the 1830's the Hussars had blue facings.
For example in 1830 the Hussars had red pelisses with blue facings.

Awesome job.

I have one question, how was rank insignia worn on the officer's 'patrol jacket'? Was it worn on the collars?

Thanks ChrisF202. As per the dress regulations, I have found that, only field officers wore rank badges on the collar during 1855-1881 in patrol dress.

Thanks! That's what I had thought, however I thought maybe they also had black cuff braiding as well Smile

British Army Officers rank Empty Patrol jacket

Post  wfrad Wed 18 Jul 2012, 6:33 am

Chris,
For myself, confusion reigns over the patrol jacket and tunic.
Tunics carried rank badges on the collar until directed to move the badges from the collar onto the shoulder in 1880, some regiments didn't comply immediately.

I don't believe that rank badges were carried on the patrol jacket collar, I'm unable to find a direct reference to the position of rank badges for the patrol jacket.
Although some illustrations and old photographs appear to confirm that badges were not worn on the patrol jacket collar I'm unable to confirm it that was indeed the case.
Also the variety of jackets with each regiment having it's own design doesn't help.
Maybe an expert can help.
