Very good photos. The modern "Garde Rouge de Dakar" (Red Guard of Dakar) are the direct descendents of the Senegalese Spahis of French colonial times and still wear virtually the same uniform. Apart from the Italian Bersaglieri, they are probably the only troops still to wear the fez as a headdress. Because it had been widely worn by colonial troops until the early 1960s, the fez quickly vanished from the armies of the newly independent African states.

I believe the Spanish Army's Regulares (colonial infantry from Spanish Morocco - Ceuta and Melilla) still wear the Fez with their dress uniform.

The mixed gender and rather chic appearance of the modern Regulares is a little ironic - considering the ferocious reputation of Franco's Moorish troops of the same name during the Spanish Civil War.
