Here’s an attempt at a Royal Horse Artillery Gunner circa 1890.
The image from imagecabin {trying out site} is a little on the small side but compared to sum of the free hosting sites it seem to be bug free.
Photo bucket just might have the edge though.

You could be right chris.
Just what you are used too I think, but imagecabin does seem to be worth a look at for anyone wishing to use an online host.

Hi WF. Did your original source indicate the reason for the solar topee? Presumably it shows the RHA in Indian cold weather full dress but I hadn't been aware that this branch of the artillery served overseas in peacetime during the time of the Raj. Because of their present ceremonial role one tends to think of them as being an extension of the Household Troops, based primarily in London. Clearly unfairly.

Royal Artillery Empty topee

Sorry for the title, it's a lilttle missleading, should have just said Horse Artillery.
Commonwealth units of the Horse Artillery wore the topee ie Australian Victorian Horse Artillery.
My appoligies and well spotted.
That’s what happens when you looking at several different uniforms to compare and your brains in neutral.
Saying that, when your clutch is on the way out it's very hard to engage any gear.

Here’s an image of a private in the New South Wales Volunteer Rifles.
Not been able to confirm the details its mainly an ad-hoc affair.
Some references stated that they had a rifle green tunic with black facing shortly after 1860.
I have as yet not been able to find another reference to confirm it.
My illustration is made up from a couple of cigarette style cards with very little info, one of which is on the very good digger history site.

The 1st New South Wales Volunteer Rifles were based at Hyde Park Barracks from 1860-70.
The first volunteers were mainly middle class and the unit mainly performed ceremonial duties and stood guard over Sydney’s public buildings
The rifles evolved over a period of thirty years from purely a middle class volunteer joke into a one of the main contingents of the Sudan campaign of 1895.
Any details you can add will be very welcome.

Rifle green was worn in the 1850s, much like the Metropolitan Rifle Corps in London.
Again like the English volunteers, grey was adopted by the NSW vols from 1859.
The Sydney Bn wore black facings, the Suburban green and the country districts a mixture of green and red.
I have all this detailed in my CD on NSW uniforms
Scarlet was adopted in 1870 with the departure of the Imperial Garrison. It was worn by the short-lived Permanent Infantry and also the 1st Volunteer Battalion. Scarlet remained the infantry uniform until 1895 when khaki was adopted, but returned in 1897.

Turns out that the Royal Horse Artillery did serve in India in peace-time after all - at any rate an Army General Order of 1/8/81 did include provision for an Indian service white cork helmet for all three branches of the Royal Artillery with slightly differing details ("dead gilt base of leaf pattern" for the RHA). So WF and Sean's splendidly colourful illustrations of the Victorian Horse Artillery, complete with solar topee, would probably illustrate the UK horse gunners as well.
