Re: Civil War Zouaves
Louisiana Tiger Zouaves
The colour image (Left) is from; Uniforms of the Civil War in Colour 1861-65 by Philip J Haythornthwaite.
The B.W image (Right) is from Confederate Forces of the American Civil War By Philip Katcher.
Katcher;
Jackets were dark blue with red trim, red fezzes with blue tassels and trousers were blue and white striped (some say that they were made of bed ticking); and gaiters were white.
Haythornthwaite;
Wore a typical Zouave costume, consisting of red stocking cap with blue tassel, dark brown jacket with red braid in varying patterns, red shirts and sashes and trousers made from bed-ticking, sometimes white with blue stripes or mixtures of red, white and blue.
I believe that Katcher comes closer to the truth, as it seems that the jackets were dyed blue that often turned brown due to the poor quality of the dye used. Later on in the war they may have also been issued with nut-brown jackets as replacements for their original issue.
Also the jury is defeatedly out on the red, white and blue stripes.
It seems that Haythornthwaite hasn’t taken too much time on his research, just repeated what others have said. Maybe if Haythornthwaite has mentioned that the original blue were replaced by brown then it would have given his statement more credence.
Personally, I believe Katcher is more accurate. Although some experts don't appear to be all that sure either.

Re: Civil War Zouaves
Tiger Zouaves, text from Osprey's Elite 62
Figure D1 is a Tiger corporal who wears the units blue Zouave jacket decorated by tombeaux in red tape. It has been claimed that the Tiger Rifles were issued both blue and brown jackets, but in fact blue was the only issue. Dome jackets quickly weathered and faded to a brown colour because of the poor quality of the dye.
Fig D2 + D3 have discarded their jackets, and many Tigers, possibly inspired by several Tigers (including their commander, Roberdeau Wheat) who had served with Garibaldi’s ‘Red Shirts’ before the Civil War. The blue striped trousers are the most distinctive part of the Tiger Rifles uniform, and it is said they were made out of hard -wearing bed ticking.
Fig D1 and one of the Tiger Rifles privates (D2) have tucked their trousers into gaiters, while the other private (D3) has tucked his trousers into distinctive striped socks that wouldn’t look out of place on a modern day basketball player.
One contemporary account says that the red fezzes with blue tassels worn by the Tiger Rifles resembled skull caps, and some devil may care Tigers, like D3, adopted the habit of wearing straw hats, sometimes with a patriotic motto on the headband. The Tigers were armed with 1841 pattern Mississippi rifle muskets, a very distinctive looking weapon. But D2 has dropped his musket, preferring to go at the Yankees with just his Bowie Knife. This rugged veteran with the eyepatch has a Colt revolver tucked underneath his waist-belt.

This image below of a LA Zouave Trousers based on the LA state Flag 1861-2, is from orpsutler.webs.com/zouave which show a red stripe on the trousers.
Most seem to agree that the trousers just had a blue stripe, but their appears to be a lack of hard evidence since many sources have been shown to be unreliable.
