Italian East Africa, Somalia Ascari ranks 1930s
Here’s a rank chart for native Ascari police and troops for the period of Italian sponsorship 1930’s.
The Colours are not quite right, all cap badges I’ve attempted were brass..
Police had blue backing to their rank badges, troops had black.
Sharpshooter Duke of Abruzzi had the addition of a gold crown over the gold embroidered rifle.

Ascari Marina 1928
Navy Ascari service dress 1928.
The black ribbon on the tarbusc has yellow lettering, the lettering shown [MARINA] here is not an actual title that I know of.
Dark red tarbust with mid blue tassel,
White jumper with mid blue cuffs,
White shirt,
The navy mid blue collar is without stars on the flap at the back.
Black scarf with white lanyard,
Mid blue waist sash,
White breeches,

Re: Italian East Africa, Somalia Ascari ranks 1930s
What about officer ranks? Am I correct in assuming that the officers were on special assignment from the regular Italian Army and as such wore the standard Italian Army officer rank insignia?
I once came across information regarding the Italian Africa Police rank insignia but I can't seem to find the chart I had made

Italian ranks WWII
Chris,
The book deals with various native troops including zaptié [native Carabinieri), Dubat (irregular troops), Gogle (rural & canal Guards) & Marina (Navy), for some reason not Regio but just Marina Italiana which Zaptie would be in a better position to explain than myself, maybe because of the nature of the force it wasn't thought to qualify as a 'Regia Marina' or just an oversight by the author.
Regards
WF

No, for the native sailors in Somalia ( and also in Eritrea) the correct writing is REGIA MARINA with a five pointed star at the begin et at the end of writing .For the few native sailors on the ships , they change it with the name of the ship . In the drawing of the book maybe you can see only the secon world .
Ps : sorry for my bad english

R Marina
Firstly believe me when I say don’t worry about your English, my Italian is zero.
I do not doubt that you are correct Zaptie, all I can find hidden in the text is a mention of R Marina, which I missed due to my ignorance of Italian.
No pictures of the navy just line drawings and the quality of the pictures in the book is quite poor.
The book (paperback pamphlet really) is LE UNIFORMI DELL ‘A.O.I. (SOMALIA 1889-1941) Piero Crociani & Andrea Viotti.

Le Uniformi dell A.O.I. (Somalia 1889-1941)
Previous posts have been screwed up by Photo Bucket deleting links without warning.
Here’s another page fro Le Uniformi dell A.O.I. (Somalia 1889-1941).
I've included the original page along with the coloured page.
Images are quite large.
I've added a smaller image showing all three figures.

Re: Italian East Africa, Somalia Ascari ranks 1930s
Below figure 1 is straight forward, figure 2 however doesn’t quite work out.
Possibly due to mistakes in my attempts at translating various images.
Reading that the first Italian uniform regulations for the Askari stated that the waist sash would be tartan.  Also many of the books refer to the sash as tartan but don’t give any further information.
As far as I can find out the unit number ‘3’, that’s on the collar, isn’t listed as having a tartan sash in any further uniform changes.
The shading on the image appears to resemble a cavalry sash shown in the pages below, with a vertical plain band between bands of tartan [Scottish] rather than the infantry tartan [Scottish].
Any Ideas?

Re: Italian East Africa, Somalia Ascari ranks 1930s
Here's what I ended up doing.
As far as I could tell the early 'tartan' was a series of coloured squares that varied according to the design.
