Snare drum blazes
While on the subject of pipe bands and drums and bugles/military bands, another question pops to mind that my research cannot answer.
When did the regiments start adding "Drum blazes" to their snare and tenor drums? Many pictures I have show the drums shells to be brass, but after WWI there seems to be addition of regimental crests/blazes etc.
Can anyone add or comment on this? Thanks.

I'm not sure of the exact date, as I'm mainly interested in post 1870s but there are photos showing bandsmen in white during the 1860s showing emblazoned drums, and painting of a much earlier date.
