Re: BOER WAR UNFORM
This is a mounted infantryman of the British Army between 1902 and 1905.
With the cap and shoulder strap insignia too faint to identify, the best clue as to unit identity is the round "Broderick cap" worn as fatigue or undress headdress by British infantry (except Scottish) regiments from 1902 to 1905. The semi-circular white patch on the front of the cap band is in the facing colour - which unfortunately could be that of any one of about 17 line infantry regiments with white facings, or the Coldstream Guards.
The background looks South African (the Broderick cap was not worn in India). A fairly substantial force of British regulars was maintained in South Africa between 1902 and 1914, partially for internal security purposes (annexation of the Boer Republics was a recent event) and partially because it was a convenient central holding location for forces which could be required at short notice in either Europe or India.

Re: BOER WAR UNFORM
Completely concur with Rowan.
Perhaps the scenery is Malta and not South Africa, which seems to have hosted a number of units prior to deployment elsewhere, and was a good ground for training Mtd Inf. Although South Africa is just as likely but I would have thought the felt hat or Wolesley helmet would have been worn.
