New US Army Uniforms
A step back in time to the 40's and 50's. It looks like it's going to be a long drawn out process before everyone has the new/old uniform.

Re: New US Army Uniforms
I understand they'll be issuing an overseas cap that apparently will be the usual headgear. In the meantime, the new garrison cap looks awful, like a bus driver's cap. But that's just my opinion. I was in the army in the 60s and I didn't like the garrison cap then, either.
While I also understand they're trying to bring back the uniform worn during the war, they have only replicated, as it were, the officer's pattern uniform and colors. There will be other less obvious differences, too. Undoubtedly, the trousers will be narrower and the material for both coat and pants will be inferior to that used in the 40s. On the other hand, during the life of the AG44 uniform, several different materials were used at one time or another for the issue garments. The original issue material was serge and fairly heavy. Officers had other materials to choose from. Lighter weight fabrics were used later but I have no first-hand experience with them.
Overall, there are trends that seem to be almost world-wide. Among them are the same pattern uniforms for all ranks, using the same dress or service uniform year-round and in a lighter fabric. And in a few cases, reintroducing full-dress uniforms for at least some units or individuals, generally reflecting previous styles. And there are continual experiments with dress uniforms as well, most of which remain unknown to the general public.

Re: New US Army Uniforms
Although changing the uniform by going back to the WWII look was mentioned, I believe it was more to do with the colour than an exact copy of the WWII uniform.
Cost would also be another issue, using modern cheaper material though isn't always a good idea, especially for uniforms.
One example of cost cutting during WWII, the Pentagon decided that cutting back on the amount of cotton used in stitching seams would be a good idea. With the end result that the gear wasn't fit for purpose, with the seams failing because they couldn't take the riggers of combat use.
They still have five or six years to make up their mind, unless some moron has already ordered in bulk to force a final decision.
I agree with you about the caps, as for dress uniforms for enlisted personnel, I wouldn't be surprised if for most they would be an optional extra at their own expense.
