I have started a project documenting modern British mess dress. Each Regiment will have a plate plus additional supporting photographs. Any thoughts on the plates?

(It appears I can't post links to pgotobucket yet will in a few days)

I’m not sure what you mean by 'thoughts on the plates'.
If you are thinking about the layout, then maybe copy how the mess dress is displayed in the old dress regulations.  Side view of jacket & waist coat with additional details of the coat back, collar and cuff when required.
Then there’s what do you class as modern, post 2000?  If so then it will certainly cut your workload down.

As for photo bucket, since it modernised the site I’ve found it more trouble than it’s worth.
For a lot of forum images I use Postimage.org, not too basic but very easy to use that hasn't the rubbish that photo-bucket throws at you.

Or, if you don’t need private folders then open a Pinterest account, if you don't already have one, then use the 'Host an image' [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]and 'insert image' [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]facility on the forum.  After you have loaded the image onto the forum you can then save it into a folder on Pinterest.

Best of luck with the tartan and plaid.

Hope this is of some help

Yup sort of meant how I had them laid out. I have them in photo bucket but it appears I need to wait seven days after registering here in order to post the link to the pictures not a photobucket thing but a this forum thing

By "modern" I meant today circa 2017. Since this is strictly for me not publication I am using photos and documentation readily available from the net sort of a "fair use" type thing. Be different if I was selling them.

Very nice,
Just a suggestion, if you use a number of images from one site, a tailors for example.
Maybe putting a link to their site may help in case they find out and take offence.
It would after all be free advertising for them.

not a bad idea but these are really for me I never planned to publish them. The pics here are mostly from G D Golding I will drop them a note and ask if I should delete them from public view

don't want to step on anyone's toes

got to wonder though how someone would even actually complain. I think this board is Australian? although I don't know what country it is hosted in the pics are from England and I am in the US. Just the legal implications alone are mind boggling complex of they wanted to complain. I mean if they did I would just delete them they are really just for me but wow

Copy write is a legal mine field and most wouldn’t bother to complain, unless they see someone making a profit out of their work.

Pinterest and friends have grabbed thousands of images without problems.

Given credit is just a curtsey but tends to be all that’s needed.
I wouldn’t worry about it and just crack on regardless.

I have my own website don't make a penny from it but when I grabbed the pictures for it I tended for the most part to ask. Most people said go for it

if anyone complained I deleted them

Now I wish I could get some of those color plates like for the 1911 mess dress for the modern ones. I would make my own but I don't know what tool to use to draw them or have the skills but I would pay for a full set

I haven’t seen any colour plates within the dress regulations that I’ve managed to get hold of, just black/white.
The photographs of the uniforms in the Dress regulations are also limited when it comes to showing details such as the collar and cuffs.
There are colour plates in a reproduced 1886 pattern book, the quality of which is disapointing.
If anything, for details, I wish that I could get my hands on the tailors books rather than the regulations plates.
Forgive me if this is teaching you how to suck eggs but:
I’ve loaded a couple of the drawings from the 1886 book which I believe are better than the plates for showing the cuff and collar detail.
Also I’ve used a paint program, in this case PhotoPlus, to show a simple way to colour a photo on a couple of these images.
Open a new layer, colour it and adjust the opacity until you are happy with it and then merge visible.
It’s time consuming but its works on any program that supports layers, that is if you have the patience.
There's a number of free programs that should do this quite well, just a matter of trying one out and see if you like it, if you dont just try another.

I appreciate any help

I am working on a line of 1:24 (75mm) white metal figures in mess dress starting with the modern regiments. I plan to do one figure for every regiment currently active. It would be great if I could include a front and back color shot like the ones Sean sells with each figure as a painting guide

Are you looking for something along the lines of a template that you can fill and add details onto such as lace and badges?
The images below, not an actual uniform, would be for the NCOs.

I know nothing about figures so,
Have you put specs in for more than one style, cavalry, Infanty and corps?
Or are you cutting initial costs by starting with a single type of figure, say the basic infantry uniform?

Starting with the basic staff uniform as the five foot guard regiments are almost the same just the lapel badges and some trim differences

Then the two horse guards and then go from there

What too do you use to color these in? i am kind of limited in what I have available

I use Serif PhotoPlus but there’s plenty of free alternatives, try out one or two and see which of them you prefer.
Link for free stuff: http://alternativeto.net/software/serif-photoplus/?license=free

I started using Serif when they used to offer older versions for free.
Now they offer try out versions with tools disabled.
I’ve added a page link as they may serve your needs, but I honestly don’t know how many functions are disabled in these try out versions.
Link for Serif: http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/

Gimp and Paint.net are popular although Gimp can be a high learning curve.
Maybe try Pinta, a few of these program require the .NET framework but it should be installed with them.
Hope this helps
