salute to the Confederate flag Empty salute to the Confederate flag

Reading The Flags of the Confederacy, published 1988,  I became curious as to how the pledge to the flag is interpreted today.
“I Salute the Confederate Flag with affection, reference, and undying devotion to the Cause for which it stands”

I’ve noticed that  some organisations omit the ‘devotion to the cause’ part of the pledge, while others say the whole pledge regardless of the possible interpretations and assumptions that could be made about such a pledge.
My personnel view is that many members of these organisations remain true to the pledge without understanding the mindset of the original members who’s choice it was to adopt the 1861 Confederacy pledge.
Times have changed and those who would wish for the return of the Confederacy’s ideals are I hope few in number, however many are honouring the Confederacy pledge.
One argument is that it’s a pledge to the battle flag and the brave confederate soldier, a noble ideal but didn’t the battle flag stand for the Confederate army, the Confederate Cause?  Not the individual soldier.

I then came across this post ( http://civilwartalk.com/threads/about-the-scv-salute-to-the-confederate-flag.78010/ ).
A simple question is asked regarding ‘The Sons of Confederate Veterans’ making the Confederacy pledge, questioning the ‘Cause’ part of the pledge.
I found the results to be quite interesting how the true meaning of the original verse is interpreted today.

My personnel view is that the Confederacy had the Cause, the flag represented Confederacy and thereby the Cause.
If the real meaning is blurred or forgotten, does it really matter today if people wish too retain a little of the past?
I’m not too sure but if they are causing no harm to anyone, why not.....
