From the New York Public Library collections.
The bride of Maximilian I of Mexico was Belgian, Princess Charlotte. She was provided with a bodyguard of Belgian troops that included light infantry and grenadiers. They arrived in 1864 and many stayed with her to the end of the regime and attended her funeral in 1927.
