Members of the 22nd Kansas Volunteers, with a rather obsolescent looking rifle, air their brogans at Camp Alger, Virginia, sometime in 1898 or '99. I see the shoes, but no sign of the socks.

The Springfield M1873 "Trapdoor" rifle was the standard rifle used by the majority of the state volunteer and National Guard units in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection. The regular US Army used the M1892 Krag-Jorgensen rifle as did a handful of the volunteers and National Guardsmen. To further complicate logistical issues, the US Navy and Marines used the M1885 Remington-Lee rifle! It wasent until the adoption of the M1903 Springfield rifle that the US military had a single standard issue rifle.
