Georgia State Guard

What fascinates me is the levels of military units in the US, regular army, national guard and then state guards?

The State Guard/Defense Force/Naval Militia/etc are very much like the British Home Guard during WWII. They are technically considered military personnel but they are funded entirely by the state government and cannot be sent overseas, their levels of training and equipment vary state by state. At one point, virtually every state and territory had a State Guard/State Defense Force however currently only 22 states plus Puerto Rico have active State Guard units. New York, Alaska, Ohio, Illinois, Texas, and Virginia also have state naval militias.

For the most part, no. They wear the standard service and dress uniforms (now being replaced with the universal "Army Service Uniform") with the "US" replaced by the state initials. The combat uniform varies by the state, some still wear the old BDUs while some wear the newer "Army Combat Uniform". The "US ARMY" nametag on the combat uniform is replaced by "ALSDF" for Alabama, "ALASKA", "NY STATE GUARD", "PRSG ARMY", "VA. DEF. FORCE", etc. The ranks, medals, and rank insignia are the same as the US Army (the naval components use US Navy ranks, insignia, etc).

Has the new universal Army Service Uniform (a modern adaption of the classic dark blue tunic and light blue trousers) started to appear in public yet? Or is the grey-green service uniform still the norm?

Ive only seen it worn twice (once at a funeral and once at a recruiting fair), for the most part it seems that the dress greens still dominate but the switchover is not supposed to be mandatory until 2011 or 2012 IIRC.
