Catching carp while the Kaiser's shells flew
Amazing story emerges of champion angler whose unique rod allowed him to land dinner for his trench pals in the First World War
Private John Henry Hirst was excused from war duties to fish for food
He used a unique 'spider-web' rod that had extra support for its 17ft length
But the design never caught on when he tried marketing it post-war
It was recently valued at £5,000 on an episode of Antiques Roadshow
His story came to light again following the recent appearance of his homemade bamboo rod on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow, where it was valued by an expert at £5,000.
Pte Hirst used crane-style mechanics, making the rod resemble a spider's web, to support the extra length needed to fish from a longer distance.
The distinctive rod was used by Pte Hirst during his days as a competitive angler after the war, leading him to win a string of medals as captain of the famous Bradford team in the 1930s and building a reputation as 'unbeatable'.
