Spammers out of control
Whats up with the number of spammers as of late? They seem to be showing up like crazy.

Yes - this plague could very well destroy the site. Can the Administrator advise if anything can be done?

spammers
I don't know myself but maybe the only way forward is to have a blank [firewall] main page, password protected before gaining access to main site.
Downside would be that it prevents someone from having a preview of the site...
It's becoming a little tedious having to open pages only to find c##p.
These individuals and companies and are a major headache.

Im surprised they have been at it this long. I figured Sean would have fixed this by now, perhaps he is on vacation or something.

Re: Spammers out of control
Been out for a couple of days, and surprised at the amount of 'stuff' that has hit the site. Must mean its gone up in the google rankings or suchlike. I've thought about password access to join but that seems to put people off and that's not what I want. I'll keep clearing them and will monitor the situation. My apologies for the problem but its a fact that some people can't let others enjoy themselves without buggering it up.
Re: Spammers out of control
I understand your reservations Sean but I wonder if the only way to ensure that "Uniforms of the World" continues is to impose some form of firewall/passport access protection on it. The spammers show no sign of thinning out, established contributors are discouraged and potential new participants are scared off by the flood of rubbish.
Easy for me to wax pompous though - I don't have to figure out a solution.
Cheers.

Re: Spammers out of control
After spending too long cleaning out these bast**ds, I've got a new system from the forum controllers that will hopefully stop this sort of thing. But it also stops people joining and doing an immediate message.
spammers
Forgive the idiot reply, by people joining I assume that means new members.
Could an email address added onto the main page solve this problem by allowing individuals to request membership via the email address, but would that put too much strain on what's already a mammoth task?
Sorry if I've misunderstood the problem and as said before we don't have the problem of finding the fix, It's always easier to complain the do anything about it!
Nice new look also....

Spammers
Great,
But, do they ever listen or care about anything or one but themselves.
They hit sites with no regard to whether the product is suitable to advertise where children may have access.
What we need is a first rate hacker to give them a taste of unwanted attention bit time!

Re: Spammers out of control
You should try deleting them every few hours or so.
This is getting very tedious.
New system not working so I'm tending towards winding this up

Shutting down the forum would be a tragedy. This is the last dedicated uniform/rank insignia related forum that I am aware of. I suggest requiring an account confirmed by a staff member to postAdmin wrote:You should try deleting them every few hours or so.

I second that. Also maybe require anyone registering to type in a captcha, since the spammers are most likely bots.

That's another idea that I like. Most forums nowadays require one if not both of these security measures.Animal wrote:ChrisF202 wrote:Shutting down the forum would be a tragedy. Admin wrote:Yep, done all that, and still cleared out ten more this morning.
You're requiring new registers to wait for confirmation and fill a captcha, and yet the spammers are still coming? I guess the saying is true- "build a better mousetrap...."
I suppose you could also require them to say why they want to join this site. I seriously doubt that spambots would be able to give a very convincing answer. Alternately, you could perhaps give some of the more senior members here moderator or administrator function to deal with these scumsuckers. In any event, it would be quite sad to see this site go because of the spammers.

Re: Spammers out of control
Or I can delete all members and start from scratch again, so everyone has to join through the new system. No promises that I can see everyone who has a link into the forum.
Re: Spammers out of control
Hopefully this last action has fixed the problem, my apologies for taking so much time (if it works)
Re: Spammers out of control
I don't see any spam posts today, so you must've did something right.
