Sartorial splendor.
Whilst we react badly to the wearing of fur coats nowadays, in the recent past it was the best method of reducing cold casualties. Both sides used them in the Great War, although I think it brings you back to much earlier warriors in longboats with big axes.

Great pic. I think during WWI that they became unpopular quite quickly as they got sodden and muddy and became so heavy as to be unwearable.
