Aaah the dear old Encyclopaedia Britannica 1911 edition. I still have a set given to me by a relative who had in turn received it from an elderly university professor of hers. It was the last edition of the Britannica that devoted the detailed attention to the article "Uniforms" that the subject warranted. The 1928 and subsequent editions only provided a couple of pages on the topic. By contrast the 1911 work included not only the illustrated plates shown but also 12 pages of double column print covering most aspects of the uniforms then worn by the large and medium sized armies and navies of the era. This detailed narrative included chatty comments such as "Britain has most completely divorced service and full dress, and that in consequence her full dress is handsomer and her service dress plainer than those of any other country" or "The universal" (Italian Army) colour is a dark flat blue faintly tinged with purple".
